Surah al-Qadr ayah 3
Laylatu'l-qadr khayrun min alfi shahr
The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months
The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah:
Ahmad ibn Hanbal reported from Abu Huraira that the Prophet said when the month of Ramadan approached: "People, the month of Ramadan has come. The month of blessings has come. It is a month in which fasting is ordained. During this month the gates of Paradise are flung open, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained. The month contains a night which is superior to a thousand months. One who is deprived of its merits is truly unfortunate." Bukhari and Muslim reported a hadith that the Prophet said, "One who stands in worship in this night with faith, hoping for reward from Allah, is forgiven all the sins committed earlier."
