Surah al-Layl ayah 11

Arabic text

Wa maa yughni 'an hu maluhu idha taradda

And what will his wealth avail him when he goes down?

The following is an excerpt of commentary on this ayah:

Abu Bakr in early Makkan days used to buy and free weak and old slaves and slave-women who embraced Islam. Once, his father Abu Qahafa, who had not yet entered the fold of Islam, said, "You should instead emancipate strong and sturdy slaves so that they may help you when you need them." Abu Bakr replied, "Father, I do not do this for worldly gains. I hope only to win the pleasure of Allah." (Ibn Jarir)
