My Hijab Story
Assalamualaikum!
I just started wearing hijab about a week ago so i thought i's better share my story before i forget it.
I'm 19 years old and in my first year of uni. I've been considering wearing hijab since about six months ago, but the time never seemed right. (Silly little reasons. There will always ALWAYS seem to be little barriers. The trick is just making that first step to overcome them).
Anyways, after my gap year, i started uni and was placed in halls with me as the only muslim here. Aaaaargh! everyone knew i was different as i prayed, didn't drink, fasted, didn't go clubbing etc, but something kept bugging me. It was only when i joined the islamic society that i realised i didn't show off myself as having a clear "muslim identity". Nobody,- from seeing me could tell i was muslim. In fact i was even mistaken for being Sikh. Oh no!!
The society also was introduced to the fact that hijab is FARDH. Strictly speaking, whatever is fardh, Allah has commanded us to do. Being MUSLIMS (ie; those that submit to Allah) we shouldn't even question what He has asked us to do.
So i thought, well thats it, I'll start this Ramadhaan. Mid-Ramadhaan came, nothing materialised and and i was getting desperate.
So I changed my personal deadline to Tomorrow. No more putting it off. I briefed my non-muslim hall-mates about it and they were pleasantly supportive.
The next day I was a barrel of nerves. I stepped out to go to lectures.... and honestly it wasn't that bad!! Yes people look and gasp but at the end of the day, your hair isn't the most important thing in someone's life. Mashallah the muslim sisters were fantastic. As for the non- muslims, most of them were fine and understood the significance of it. One or two will keep their distance but that will be expected.
I'm taking this one day at a time now. Its still a bit difficult to get used to, as well as the responsibilities that come with it but Insha'allah I'll have the strength to wear this forever if Allah wills.
Hope my story has inspired at least one muslim sister out there!!
Salaams.
