Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) plans to force lawmakers in the House to take a stand this week on whether to proceed with impeachment proceedings against Vice President Richard Cheney.
In a statement posted to his YouTube site Monday, Kucinich claimed that, "This vice president violated his oath of office by taking us into a war against Iraq based on lies, and is now rattling the saber of war against Iran."
"Impeachment is the remedy that the founders envisioned many years ago when they were concerned about the abuse of power by an executive," he said.
His campaign will hold an open conference call Monday night, at 7 p.m. EST, elaborating his plans, which include introducing a "privileged resolution" to the floor Tuesday. House procedure will then require representatives to vote on the measure within two days, either passing it, sending it to a committee or killing it with a "motion to table." Sending it to committee would postpone an immediate floor vote and might be the most politically appealing to leading Democrats, particularly those running against Mr. Kucinich in his bid for the presidency.
The Kucinich campaign says "dozens" of supportive organizations will be lobbying House members on the resolution. Among them is the National Lawyers Guild, which passed a resolution Friday in support of impeachment, for both Cheney and President Bush.
The House impeachment resolution (H.R. 333) currently has 22 sponsors.
