Kucinich Campaigns in Hawaii
Kucinich, first Presidential candidate to visit Hawaii, arrives Thursday morning accompanied by wife Elizabeth for four-day campaign visit
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Wednesday, September 12, 2007
Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich and his wife Elizabeth arrive in Honolulu tomorrow (Thursday) morning for a four-day, four island campaign visit, the first this year by any candidate of either major party.
Kucinich, in his sixth term as an Ohio Congressman, ran for the Democratic Presidential nomination in 2004, and came in second in Hawaii's caucus voting with more than 31% of the popular vote. Sen. John Kerry, the eventual Democratic nominee, won with about 47%, and former Senator John Edwards, who is running again this year, received about 12.5%.
"I love Hawaii, and I'm looking forward to presenting my platform to the citizens of a state that other candidates are ignoring," said Kucinich. "The issues of peace and war and environmental protection and health care touch every citizen of the United States, not just those on the mainland."
Kucinich, an acknowledged underdog in the campaign for the Democratic nomination, has been picking up momentum and rising in the national polls over the past few months because of his strong showing in recent Presidential debates and forums. In an on-line survey of viewers who watched the recent ABC News televised debate, Kucinich came in first, well ahead of Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
He and his British-born wife will be making public appearances together and separately during their stay on the islands.
