The House of Representatives has its Independence Day District Work Period this week. Dennis has been in meetings around Cleveland morning to night without a break since Friday. The House will resume its business in Washington next week.
We sadly bear witness to the violence in London. We grieve for the souls and loved ones directly affected and are mindful of the effects such acts have on everyone as we recommit to working for peaceful resolutions to conflict.
Additional Cosponsors Signing Onto Homeward Bound Act
House Joint Resolution 55 - the bipartisan Homeward Bound Act - now has 25 cosponsors, including Republican Jim Leach of Iowa. The text of the Resolution, list of cosponsors, action items, talking points and committee contact information are all online in our discussion forum. This legislation increasingly is being acknowledged as the principal vehicle likely to bring the U.S. occupation to an end. Please be sure your Member of Congress and the committee members know how you feel. Your 2-minute phone conversation with a staffer is important. Use our forum to discuss the Bill and ask questions.
Congressional Progressive Caucus Publishes Statement on National Priorities
The Congressional Progressive Caucus, of which Dennis Kucinich is one of 59 members, released on June 28th its "Progressive Promise" statement of national priorities. In its introduction, Caucus co-chair Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) said, "It is a moral document that has its priorities straight: it puts the basic needs of people above corporate greed, it safeguards and promotes our best democratic principles, and it offers a vision of US leadership in the world." "We are in the midst of a Progressive awakening in this country and I have never been more confident and optimistic about the future of Progressive Politics," said co-chair Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA). Peace Alliance Plans September Department of Peace Conference and Lobby Day In Washington D.C.
Dennis Kucinich and cosponsors intend to re-introduce legislation calling for a cabinet-level Department of Peace on September 14, 2005, as a tribute to the victims of the attacks on September 11, 2001. In conjunction with the Bill's re-introduction, The Peace Alliance - one of the groups working to develop support for this legislation - will hold a conference, training and lobby days in Washington from Sept. 10-12. Speakers at the conference are expected to include Dennis Kucinich, Walter Cronkite, Marianne Williamson, Patch Adams, Jonathan Schell, Barbara Marx Hubbard and more. Musicians Tim Reynolds and Roy Eaton will perform. More information on the conference is here.

California State Senator Sheila Kuehl's legislation to create a single-payer health care system in California, S.B. 840, is advancing with its passage in the California Senate and, on Tuesday, its passage out of the Assembly Health Committee. Every success in the states moves us closer to national single-payer health care in America.
Traffic Picking Up In Our State Discussion Forums
For a few months our discussion forum has featured a section for each state. This is a place for people to post news of special interest to a certain area, notices of events, legislative alerts, etc. The single-payer Bill mentioned above has been tracked in the California forum for months. Forum hit counts - the tracks viewers leave when they read an article - are beginning to climb in the state forums. We invite you to utilize these sections for general announcements and discussion of interest to the progressive community in your state.
Tips For Utilizing the Forum
Our discussion forum, developed and managed by Claudia Slate and a committed team of long-term volunteers, continues to receive praise for its well-organized information and intelligent discourse. We encourage you to participate. Everyone can read the public sections, and a simple registration is required to post a message (separate from the registration required to get on our mailing list). We frequently create forum sections for discussion of items appearing on the kucinich.us home page, and we hope very much you'll contribute your insights and suggestions for action on issues which are important to you.
Diversity of discourse on the forum is encouraged. All sections of the forum are moderated - inappropriate posts such as commercial announcements or attacks on individuals rather than issues will be edited or deleted and, in extreme circumstances, repeat offenders will be banned.
