Kucinich: Attack on Iran Will Further Destabilize Region; Make US Less Secure

Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Ranking Member of the House Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations, issued the following statement today on news reports that the Administration is preparing for an attack against Iran:

"The war in Iraq has been a disaster, but a war against Iran would be worse. Another preemptive unilateral war by the United States would further destabilize the region and make our country less safe.

"This Administration's failure to allow weapons inspectors to complete their work in Iraq led our nation into a unnecessary war, and has caused the death of over 1,300 US soldiers. We must not make the same mistake again.

"This Administration must allow the international community to continue weapons inspections in Iran and have the international community disarm any and all illegal weapons that may be in the country. Any covert or overt action in Iran without the approval of the international community would be illegal and further isolate the United States.

"We have been through this before with this Administration. The American public and the media must not be fooled again by this Administration's rhetoric. We must not forget the lessons the Iraq experience has taught us. This Administration misled the public and the media about the danger Iraq posed to our country, created a false crisis, and misused intelligence in the lead up to the war in Iraq. We will not let them do it again.

"If this Administration has been conducting covert or illegal operations in Iran without the knowledge of Congress, then they have violated the law and Congress must take appropriate action.

"The war in Iraq has harmed the United States' reputation around the world, and made our nation less safe. We must not make the same mistake again."
