Promises Kept
"…I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep…"
These words by Robert Frost bring to mind a handmade, hand-lettered banner hanging in the Kucinich Presidential National Campaign Headquarters in Cleveland: Shall we tell our children and grandchildren to give up because there is no hope?
Our answer, your answer, and Dennis' answer has never wavered. "Absolutely not!" Dennis and all of us involved in this amazing, historic grassroots effort are keeping our promise to our children, our grandchildren, and to our world - a promise to create a future of hope and peace and truth and respect. WE WILL NOT GIVE UP!
Dennis promised he would listen to the voices of those demanding change in our country and make certain those voices were heard. He began this trek in the numbing cold of Iowa in January, and he was at the polls with the people in Montana when the last person voted in the last primary in the nation on June 8th. He has thundered your message to cheering crowds at Democratic state conventions across this country, from Maine to Oregon to Texas, where just this past weekend, Texas Democrats passed a resolution for a Department of Peace.
Day after day, often in the middle of the night, he has crisscrossed this country on hundreds of commercial flights to keep both his Congressional commitments and his promise to meet with the American people as they take responsibility for electing the next leader of our country.
His supporters, each one of you reading this letter, have kept your promise to walk this long and difficult path with him. You have gone to your county, district and state conventions, rallied support, and performed incredible miracles, passing resolutions on our major issues to make them part of the platforms (http://www.kucinich.us/messages/061504-scott_hinchee.php) in Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington and Texas.
With patience and persistence and heartfelt commitment, you have collected more than 300,000 signatures (www.kucinich.us/petitions) to present to the Democratic Party Platform Committee demanding changes in the direction of our Party and our country - on the issues of health care, civil rights, jobs and trade exploitation issues, and the horrific war in Iraq.
Those of us working at the center of the campaign have also kept our promise to ensure that your voices are heard. We have sent representatives to each of the committee hearings where the Democratic Party is formulating the platform on which the nominated candidate will run. The journey has been challenging, and we have not given up!
Now, as the political clock is winding down, it is time to make certain that our voices - the voices for progressive change - ring out more loudly and clearly than ever, at both the final Platform Committee Meeting in Miami on July 9 and 10 and at the Democratic Convention in Boston, July 26 - 29.
We are sending a team to Miami, along with our two national platform committee members - one from Hawaii and another from Minnesota. We have 70 delegates who must attend the convention, (http://www.kucinich.us/convention/) and a convention staff in Boston who, with support from our headquarters staff in Cleveland, will continue this journey through the end of July.
To see this through, we estimate remaining campaign costs to be approximately $300K. Our candidate made a promise to run this campaign within the guidelines of campaign finance reform, and we have kept that promise. So, once again, we ask you to support our ongoing commitment to represent your voice at the heart of the Democratic Party with a financial contribution. If you have already donated the maximum $2,000 per person, please send this letter on to a friend…On second thought, please send it on regardless!
Most importantly, we are, all of us, keeping our promises to our children, grandchildren and to all Life. But we still have miles to go before we sleep.
Hope to see you in Boston!
In the Spirit of Peace,
Dot
