In support of 'our' voice
A personal message from Darlene Jackson White
June 28, 2004
Dear Friends:
As National African-American Outreach Coordinator for the Dennis Kucinich Campaign, traveling the campaign trail with the candidate most admired and respected for never failing to speak the truth, I have learned one thing above all others: if your heart feels compassion for "the least of them," then your heart can inspire you to accomplish great things. Against all odds, that's what Dennis – in Cleveland, we simply call him "Dennis" – has been able to accomplish.
Not unlike another of our country's great leaders, Dennis Kucinich has a dream. His dream envisions a world at peace, an America that leads rather than terrorizes, and a nation where all have adequate health care , food, housing, and employment and educational opportunities that allow to enjoy productive and fulfilling lives.
To many, he is known as a man with strong ideals and unwavering conviction who has fought the good fight in battles that seemed almost hopeless. To some, he is a liberal Congressman from one small corner of Ohio who proposed the "radical" idea that our nation should establish a Department of Peace ; and then he dared to run for President of the United States and carry that message, and others, to every corner of our country. But unlike any other candidate, he has reached out to the disenfranchised and the disillusioned with ideas that bring hope and promise to people who feel that our leaders don't care and our political system doesn't work. Dennis spoke of Peace, of health care for all, of basic human and civil rights , of changing failed policies to make our government accountable and responsive to the issues of everyday American citizens who need and deserve a government that works for them.
With less than 30 days to go until the Democratic National Convention, Dennis still hasn't given up fighting for us. And we can't give up on him. That's why I am asking that you send a financial contribution to ensure that the Kucinich Campaign can continue to educate, inspire, and engage everyone in the democratic process all the way to the " Boston 'D' Party " next month. Every dollar will help us make sure that the issues of African-Americans and other under-served constituencies are considered by the Democratic Party Platform Committee and that our voices are heard at the Democratic National Convention.
If our Party continues racing to the safe and comfortable center of the political spectrum, it will fail to win in November, and it will fail us for years thereafter. We cannot afford to leave that kind of failed legacy. Our hearts tell us what we can and must do, and with Dennis Kucinich, we have the leader who can help us move the Party and the nation in the direction it should be moving. These are things that the Party's likely nominee, Senator John Kerry, may not be willing or able to say. But we can. And with Dennis's help, we will.
As the Reverend Jesse Jackson has said, "Sometimes common sense ought to make good sense." The 2004 Presidential election is bigger than any one person. It is an historic opportunity to unite to show the world that we will not accept mean-spirited politics, and we will not deny our own social consciousness another four years. Our good sense tells us that NOW is the time to work together to make sure we meet the needs and fulfill the dreams of those who have been disenfranchised and those who have simply given up hope from too many years of despair.
I would sincerely appreciate any help you can offer. It's time for a change . Your presence at the Boston Convention July 26-29 will signal our determination to be part of that change. It is not the time to quiet our voices and end this struggle, but rather to come together, embrace our diversity of mind, body and spirit, and take back our government and our country.
Sincerely,
Darlene Jackson White
