House Passes Kucinich/Tauscher Amendment Compelling CIA Investigation Into White House Claims of Iraq Al-Qaeda Link
Amendment Passed As Part Of FY ’05 Intelligence Authorization Act
Today, the House of Representatives passed an amendment offered by Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) and Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher (D-CA) to direct the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Inspector General (IG) to conduct an audit of the evidence of any relationship, existing before September 11, 2001, between the regime of Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda.
The House passed the Kucinich/Tauscher amendment after Vice President Richard Cheney went on national television last week to rebuke the 9/11 Commission’s finding that there was no credible evidence of a collaborative relationship between Saddam Hussein and al Qaeda.
“The American public and this Congress deserve the truth,” stated Kucinich after the House passed his amendment. “I hope this amendment will once and for all put to rest this Administration’s misleading comments on the connection between Iraq and al-Qaeda.”
The Kucinich/Tauscher amendment directs the CIA IG to conduct an audit of the evidence of any relationship, existing before September 11, 2001, between the regime of Saddam Hussein and al-Qaeda, referenced in all intelligence reporting of the Central Intelligence Agency, including products, briefings and memoranda, distributed to the White House and Congress.
“The Vice President’s comments do not match what the 9/11 Commission has found,” continued Kucinich. “If the Vice President has more information on the alleged connection between Iraq and al-Qaeda, before 9/11, he is duty bound to share it with the Commission, this Congress and the American public. I look forward to the CIA IG report, the American public deserve the truth.”
