PORTLAND, OR - Ohio Democratic Congressman and Presidential Candidate Dennis J. Kucinich will be a guest speaker at the 14th Annual Oregon Black Political Convention held at the Holiday Inn Hotel - Portland, 1441 NE 2nd Avenue this Saturday, April 17th at 12 noon.
Under its theme, "Moving The Agenda: Exercising Black Political Power", the convention serves as a forum for delegates to discuss issues and conditions affecting the African American community; and to establish, through resolutions, the positions of the Black Community, on these issues and conditions affecting it. In addition, one of the other major purposes of the convention is to endorse those candidates running for public offices during the 2004 Primary Election, who are sensitive and responsive to the issues and conditions of Blacks in Oregon.
"My platform has been created to reflect my concern with racial justice," says Congressman Kucinich. "I grew up in the inner-city of Cleveland, where my family was often the only Caucasian family in the neighborhood. People of color have been my friends and allies my entire life."
Kucinich indicated that conventions such as these are necessary throughout the United States because they help to deliver a needed voice to the mainstream communities in America.
"Too many Americans, especially African-Americans, have been intimidated, excluded, and shut out from our democracy. I support measures such as Election Day as a holiday; election-day voter registration; enhanced voting rights enforcement; an end to the racially-biased disenfranchisement of felons who have served their time," Kucinich explains. "In addition, we need comprehensive campaign finance reform and Clean Money public financing of the public's elections, ample free television time for candidates, and the break-up of the media monopolies that restrict political debate - our election system is in need of serious reform." The convention runs from Friday, April 16, 2004 until Sunday, April 18, 2004 when the convention delegates will announce their candidate endorsements.
