Kucinich Picks Up Support, Wins Delegates in North Carolina CaucusesDemocratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich drew surprisingly strong support in several North Carolina counties and appears likely to pick up three national convention delegates, according to final but unofficial results from that state's first-ever presidential caucuses.
Kucinich, the last remaining challenger to presumptive Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry, beat both Kerry and North Carolina's own Sen. John Edwards in three counties: Watauga, Orange, and Buncombe. In Watauga County, Kucinich received just over 50 percent of the votes, easily outpacing Kerry, who had 20.6 percent and Edwards, who had 21.2 percent.
In two other counties, Madison and Ashe, Kucinich came in second to Edwards and ahead of Kerry.
Official counts and final delegate allocations will be announced on April 30.
"It's clear that the voters of North Carolina recognized that this was their opportunity to help decide the direction of the Democratic Party," said Kucinich. "While the earlier primaries and caucuses gave Sen. Kerry enough delegates to secure the nomination, Democrats in North Carolina and in 13 other states and territories that have not yet voted can and will have their voices heard on issues such as the war in Iraq, universal health care, jobs and fair trade, the Patriot Act, and civil liberties."
Statewide, with all counties reporting unofficial results, Edwards led the balloting with 51.1 percent of the vote among five candidates. Kerry was second with 27.2 percent, followed by Kucinich with 12.2 percent, former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean with 5.7 percent, and the Rev. Al Sharpton with 3.3 percent.
