Campaigning in Portland Oregon, Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich warned voters in the remaining Presidential primaries that the June 30th transfer of power from the US-led Coalition Provisional Authority to an interim Iraqi government is deceptive and will not end the nightmare of bloodshed in the region.
Debating Republican Deputy Majority Whip Mark Foley on national TV from a studio in Portland, Kucinich warned that the arguments used for keeping American troops in Iraq are the same kind of arguments used to keep us in Vietnam. "We're getting into this deeper when we should be constructing a plan to bring the United Nations peacekeeping forces in because the UN is the only way out. We could be in a war which could last ten or twelve years. The Democrats should be taking a position challenging this administration for taking this country into this war!"
The four-term Ohio Congressman issued a statement from Oregon explaining the deceitful posturing the Republican administration is trying to sell the American people in the so called "transfer of power" expected on June 30th. "There's not going to be any difference in our military posture on July 1st after this so called "transfer of power" takes place." Kucinich says Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz admitted this in comments to reporters at a House Armed Services Committee last week. "The level of violence aimed at our men and women will increase as American soldiers are seen as an occupying army because the US led Coalition Provisional Authority has the final say in the new leadership of Iraq."
On CNN Kucinich debated saying, "History is repeating itself. When the British Empire tried to occupy Iraq during World War I the religious factions in the country eventually joined together ousting the British and costing thousands of lives."
Earlier this week Kucinich debated California Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher on MSNBC urging the Democratic Party to take a stand against the continued occupation of Iraq. "My position in this race; I'm like a little tugboat that's trying to pull a big liner called the Democratic Party to get it out to sea so it can sail successfully to victory. I don't think it can do that if it's staying in the harbor quibbling about whether to take a position on the war or not."
