WHO: Congressman Dennis Kucinich
WHAT: Press Conference
WHEN: Monday, April 5, 2:00 PM
WHERE: Terry Shrunk Plaza, downtown Portland between the Federal Building and City Hall, 1220 SW Third St.

Following the deadliest 24-hour period of the year for the U.S. military in Iraq, Democratic Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has scheduled a press conference for Monday, April 5th in downtown Portland at which he will call on the Democratic Party and its presumptive nominee Sen. John Kerry to take a position "in favor of saving American lives and join me in calling for a U.S. withdrawl."

"How many more American lives have to be lost before the leaders of the Democratic Party are willing to acknowledge that this war and this occupation are a disaster?" Kucinich asked. "The Administration took us to war on claims that have been proven to be lies and exaggerations, but the ever-mounting losses of life and the prospect of ever-escalating violence are deadly real and can no longer be ignored."

Kucinich made his comments amid reports that at least seven U.S. soldiers were killed and at least 24 others wounded in a clash with Shia militia in Baghdad, and at least three other U.S. servicemen were killed in similar violence in other parts of Iraq. "The United Nations must step in so U.S. forces can come home."

Kucinich, a Congressman from Ohio, led the fight on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives in October 2002 to block the war authorization resolution, and succeeded in gaining support from 126 other Democrats who voted against the measure. Despite trailing Kerry in all the primaries and caucuses so far, Kucinich, the lone remaining challenger, has continued campaigning in an effort "to redirect the Democratic Party ˆ to support withdrawal from Iraq, to support universal health care, to oppose unfair trade policies, and to oppose the violation of civil liberties embodied by laws such as the so-called Patriot Act."

Saturday and Sunday Kucinich was campaigning in North Carolina. This week, he will be in Oregon and Colorado.
