Kucinich Spends St. Patrick’s Day Fighting For
500 New Jobs In Cleveland Area
Kucinich Joins Bipartisan Effort Of Federal, State and Local Officials To Pitch NASA Glenn As New Location For 500 New NASA Jobs
Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Co-Chair of the House Aerospace Caucus, spent St. Patrick’s Day pitching NASA Glenn as an ideal location for the new NASA Shared Services Center (NSSC).
NASA Glenn, located in Kucinich’s Congressional District, is one of six centers nationwide being considered to house the new NSSC. The Center would bring about 500 new jobs to the area and allow NASA to consolidate its human resources, procurement and financial management functions.
Kucinich, in remarks today at NASA Glenn, stated:
“The Cleveland area needs three things: jobs, jobs, and more jobs. Between January 2001 and January 2004, Ohio has lost 249,000 jobs and over 160,000 manufacturing jobs. Unemployment in Ohio has increased by 46%, with a current Cleveland unemployment rate at 6.2% in December of 2003. The Ohio poverty rate is now at 10.1 percent.
“This job loss trend is unacceptable and the federal government must reverse these job losses. It is smart pubic policy for the federal government to shift good jobs to this area of the nation. Northeast, Ohio is a great location, but we need help.
“Fortunately, we have the honor of having the NASA Glenn Research Center in our backyard. NASA Glenn provides the basic scientific research that makes it possible for the United States to explore beyond our planet. I believe that the backbone of space exploration is found here, in Northeast, Ohio. I am pleased that NASA Administrator, Sean O’Keefe, has the opportunity today to see first hand the best NASA research center in the nation.
“Today we show strong bi-partisan support from all levels of government - federal, state, and local. We also have strong support for this proposal from the local business community. Placing the NSSC here is a win-win situation for all the parties involved. I look forward to working with NASA officials and my colleagues to make this happen.”
