Overview of the Democratic National Convention
The 2004 Democratic National Convention will be held in Boston, Massachusetts from July 26 to July 29. This event marks the end of the Presidential nominating process for the Democratic Party. Held every four years, the Convention is where the Democratic Party officially nominates its candidates for President and Vice President, usually based on the number of delegates candidates earn in state primaries and caucuses. The official Party platform is also approved at the Convention.
4,323 delegates and 611 alternates will travel to the convention, representing each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Virgin Islands and Democrats Abroad. Over 30,000 guests, international visitors and members of the media also will be there.
Over 80 percent of the delegates will be selected based on the results of the vote for Democratic presidential candidates in the 2004 primaries and caucuses. The balance will include Democratic members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives, Democratic Governors and Democratic National Committee members. The delegation itself is comprised of a cross-section of America's diverse population with equal representation of men and women, and members from traditionally under-represented groups.
The convention has been an institutional fixture of the Democratic Party for over a century now. It is during this time that the Party gathers not only to select the Democratic Presidential and Vice-Presidential nominees, but also to debate varying viewpoints from disparate regions throughout this country. The end product is a platform that outlines the party's positions on relevant issues facing American Democrats.
