Kucinich: No justification for war in Iraq - no weapons of mass destruction
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 1, 2004

A carefully researched report prepared by the Kucinich campaign shows that the U.S. invasion of Iraq was based on manipulation of the American intelligence community, and that Kucinich alone stood firm in the belief that the rhetoric of fear from the Bush administration about the threat from Iraq was baseless:

“The facts are clear. This administration arrived in Washington determined to invade Iraq by any means. They set out, before and after September 11, to build a case to support a decision for invasion that had already been made – that Iraq should be invaded.

“I am the only Democrat running for President of the United States who voted against the Iraq War Resolution,” says Kucinich, who led the 126 House members to vote against the invasion that violated international law and has left the U.S. military stretched to its weakest position since World War II.

The invasion of Iraq commenced more than 300 days ago. In all that time, not one of the dire threats described by the Bush administration has been validated by evidence. Even Chief Weapons Inspector Dr. David Kay says, “We were all wrong in believing that there were weapons of mass destruction.” Though he speaks the truth about the absence of WMDs, Kay misstates the facts: Dennis Kucinich has affirmed all along his conviction that there never were weapons of mass destruction.

“Even the tragedy of September 11 was not so grave a matter that it could not be manipulated towards the administration’s goal of attacking Iraq,” says Kucinich. “It was never about weapons of mass destruction, or even about Saddam Hussein. It was about regional control of petroleum in the Middle East. It was about wholesale regime change in the Middle East. It was about the rise of American unilateralism across the globe.

“It would have been difficult, if not impossible, for George W. Bush and his administration to give the American people false information about Iraq without help. The false information was picked up, uncritically disseminated, and even embellished by members of Congress, some of whom went on to become Presidential candidates.

“Now is the time for truth telling. Iraq had nothing to do with September 11. There are no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. There was no justification for this war. It was wrong to go in. It is wrong to stay in.”

Congressman Kucinich will discuss his report in an address scheduled for 12 noon MST on the Student Services Lawn of Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ.
