Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich has strongly condemned the attempted assassination of Grand Ayatolla Sistani in Iraq. Sistani, Iraq's most powerful Shi'ite cleric came under attack when gunmen opened fire on his entourage, according to a report from the New York Times. Sistani escaped the attack unharmed.

"I condemn the attempt on Ayatollah Sistani's life," said Kucinich. "Ayatollah Sistani is a central figure in the effort by the Iraqi people to achieve self-rule. It is vitally important that the United States work with him."
