Kucinich promises to remove troops from Iraq if elected

Associated Press

TUCSON, Ariz. - Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich emphasized the need for universal health care and a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq during a campaign stop here.

The Ohio congressman spoke Friday to a group of more than 500 supporters in anticipation of Arizona's Feb. 3 Democratic primary.

If elected, Kucinich promised to set a 90-day deadline to withdraw American troops from Iraq and turn over control of rebuilding the country to the United Nations.

Under his plan, Americans would continue to pay for peacekeepers and postwar reconstruction while the United Nations oversees the process.

Kucinich said putting the United Nations in charge would neutralize Iraqi mistrust of U.S. motives, which now hampers efforts to rebuild the country's infrastructure and forge a new constitution.

"It was wrong to go into Iraq and it is wrong to stay there," he told the audience.

Sara Risner-Adler, a 21-year-old college student, said she welcomed Kucinich's platform and supports him as a candidate.

"He stands for pro-choice, civil rights and a nonprofit health care system. He represents my views and opinions," she said. [ed. note: you go, girl!]
