Kucinich: Administration’s “New” Manufacturing Plan Nothing More The Continuation Of Failed Policy
Welcome To Ohio Secretary Evans: Where Did The Jobs Go?
Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) issued the following statement today on Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans’ trip to Ohio to promote the Administration’s “new” manufacturing plan:
“Ohio’s economy needs three things: jobs, jobs and jobs. Unfortunately, Secretary Evans will visit Ohio today to promote the same failed economic policies that have cost Ohio 249,000 jobs since January 2001.
“Under this Administration Ohio has lost 162,000 manufacturing jobs. In November 2003 alone Ohio lost more manufacturing jobs than every state except one.
“Ohio has lost more jobs since this Administration has taken office than any other state except California and New York. Since January 2001, Ohio’s unemployment rate has skyrocketed from 3.9% to 5.7%.
“Secretary Evans will not announce the end of NAFTA. He will not do anything about the job loss caused by cheaper foreign labor, he will not announce any new protections for US factory workers and he will not announce any new initiatives to protect Ohio’s steel industry from the illegal dumping of foreign steel. Ohio will get nothing from Secretary Evans’ visit. This is unacceptable. We can and must do better.”
