Two Kucinich events in Muscatine this week
By Staff Reports
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Democratic presidential candidate Dennis J. Kucinich will make his third campaign visit to Muscatine this week.
The Ohio congressman will speak 5:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at Muscatine Books & More, 124 E. Second St.
"We are inviting all Democrats, but we welcome anyone interested in learning about our candidate and his message," said Dan Clark, county campaign coordinator, in a news release.
"Although many of us are drawn to Dennis' leadership for peace, I'm told his talk here will also focus on protecting public utilities and the environment," Clark said.
He said Kucinich has battled for public power and against privatization and deregulation throughout his political career.
A group of walkers who support Kucinich is scheduled to arrive in Muscatine late Tuesday. Initiated by an Iowa student, the walk began in Maine and will continue to San Francisco.
The walkers will meet Muscatine residents at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Muscatine Community College, Room 75 Larson Hall, preceding a 7 p.m. Democratic Party meeting. The public is invited.

Clark said the Thursday event will observe the 25th anniversary of Kucinich's refusal to sell Cleveland's municipal electric utility when he was known as the Boy Mayor of that city.
"Muscatine boasts Iowa's largest municipally owned utility and is a leader in energy conservation, so Dennis will talk about public power and clean air and water," Clark said, noting that his first Muscatine visit was for Earth Day in April.
The second time Kucinich spoke in Muscatine was on Aug. 17, soon after the nation's worst power blackout. That weekend he wrote an essay, titled "Power to the People," in which he told the story of his fight to save the public power company (http://kucinich.us/powertothepeople.htm).
Kucinich has been honored by Public Citizen, the Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth and the League of Conservation Voters as a champion of clean air, clean water and an unspoiled earth. He was an early critic of nuclear power as being risky, economically and environmentally.
