Kucinich Focuses Debate on Substance
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 9, 2003
Tonight's debate drew a strong contrast between Congressman Kucinich's plan to end the occupation of Iraq and Dr. Dean's proposal to continue it for years.
The war is not over, Kucinich said. You cannot claim to be against the war but for the occupation.
Dennis Kucinich this evening focused a debate that began with a question about endorsements on the critical issue of the ongoing war/occupation in Iraq. He asked Ted Koppel to ask the candidates on the stage for their exit strategies for Iraq.
Kucinich's exit strategy -- he's the only candidate who has one -- would bring US troops home in 90 days as laid out at www.kucinich.us
Each candidate was asked for a timeline for exiting Iraq. Only Kucinich gave one: 90 days.
Dennis Kucinich insisted that this debate be about substance, not endorsements, polls, and money. Kucinich pointed out that he is the only candidate who voted against the "PATRIOT Act" and the War on Iraq, the only candidate with a detailed plan for single-payer health care, the only candidate who will replace NAFTA and the WTO with fair, bilateral trade agreements that protect jobs, workers' rights, human rights, and environmental protections, as well as the only candidate with a plan to end the occupation of Iraq.
Ted Koppel was quoted in the New York Times last Sunday expressing the desire that only six candidates participate in the debate. Dennis Kucinich, who was presumably not one of the six, has thus far won more applause than any other.
