Rev. Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou
In an article about the Kucinich campaign's outreach to new voters (the 18-24 age group), Rev. Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou explains why he's working for Dennis:
Rev. Osagyefo Uhuru Sekou is the National Director of Community Outreach and New Voter Development for the Kucinich for President 2004 Campaign. He is leading an effort to organize 18-24 year olds.
Rev. Sekou is a Professor of Preaching at the Seminary Consortium of Urban Pastoral Education in the Graduate Theological Urban Studies Program. Rev. Sekou is a third generation Pentecostal preacher. He is the author of the critically acclaimed "Urbansouls," which takes a refreshing approach to the spiritual crisis in America. Hip-Hop, religion, homophobia, sexism, race, and politics are delved into with an organic insight. Princeton Professor of Religion Cornel West penned the preface, writing: "Rev. Sekou has the most in depth and concise analysis of youth that I have ever heard." Robin D.G. Kelley, Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University and author of "Freedom's Dreams" writes: Urbansouls is the most eloquent meditation on the urban condition I have ever read." Since the February 2001 publication of "Urbansouls," Rev. Sekou has given over 400 lecturers at colleges, universities, and community groups. At 32, he is considered one of the most formidable intellectuals and activists of his generation. He represents the merging of civil rights activism with Hip-Hop aesthetics and vigor -- donning dreads and employing the oratorical weaponry of the Black Church.
Rev. Sekou is the former co-coordinator of the Democracy Action Project (DAP) housed at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. In the aftermath of the 2000 Elections, Democracy Summer (now DAP) trained a multi-racial group of over 100 youth activists from around the country in Tallahassee, FL. In addition to his activist work, he as served as a youth pastor in Washington, D.C., and St. Louis, MO., directed a community center, and serves as an ongoing consultant to progressive non-profit organization and religious institutions throughout the country.
Currently, Rev. Sekou is the National Director of Community Outreach and New Voter Development for the Kucinich for President 2004 Campaign. When asked why he has taken a visible role in the Kucinich Campaign, he said: "We stand at a pivotal moment in American civilization. If we do not empower a disposed electorate and disenfranchised citizenry, we stand to lose all that is dear to the democratic project. The Kucinich candidacy is the embodiment of the progressive change in this nation."
