Mother Jones is a Screaming Lefty Mag

Originally published in the Cleveland Free Times

Some of the leading journalists at America's leading newspapers, including the New York Times and the Washington Post , write political articles for the legendary left-wing magazine, Mother Jones , The Nose must note. But Plain Dealer Washington reporter Sabrina Eaton won't be because, The Nose has learned, editor Doug “Absence of Malice” Clifton went ballistic when he heard that “his” reporter was hired to write a major feature on presidential candidate Dennis “The Kooch” Kucinich , complaining that Mother Jones was a “lefty” publication, and if she wrote for it, the PD's credibility (say what?) could be compromised. From PD sources, The Nose learned that Eaton, a single mother with two children, was threatened with severe punishment, including being suspended for several weeks without pay and the possibility of being fired, if she did the story. So, instead of Eaton's article on The Kooch appearing in the November/December issue of Mother Jones , one titled “Little Big Man” by Charles Bowden is in its place. The Nose must say that we are puzzled by Clifton's reaction to Mother Jones, and whether that's any of his business since apparently Eaton had every right under the Newspaper Guild contract to write the story on her own time … Or could it be, The Nose must ask, that Clifton is embarrassed that Mother Jones would run a major story on Kucinich written by one of the PD 's reporters before the PD did so itself … which is another story altogether, The Nose must say, because Clifton has dismissed The Kooch as The Kook. The bottom line for Eaton, The Nose is sad to report, is that she was forced to pull off the Kucinich story and had to eat the cost of an expensive airline ticket…The cost to Clifton, The Nose is hearing, is another big hit to his waning credibility among his staff, who are now whispering that he is turning out to be another David Hall, his predecessor, who was also smitten by The Snake's venom and lost it. For her part, Eaton declined to answer questions about this incident posed by the Free Times . The Newspaper Guild has filed a grievance over this incident. Stay tuned.
