Kucinich Welcomes Gore's Comments on "PATRIOT Act"
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 10, 2003
Dennis Kucinich is only Democratic presidential candidate who voted against the "PATRIOT Act." He introduced a bill on Sept. 24 that would repeal major sections of it. Kucinich's leadership on this issue has shaped the dialogue of the presidential candidates and now of another important leader in the Democratic Party.
Kucinich said:
"Vice President Al Gore's comments on the so-called 'PATRIOT Act' are a very welcome addition to the public discussion of this unpatriotic piece of legislation. Democrats should listen to him on this. The 'PATRIOT Act' is an assault on the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and we must make a priority of reclaiming them."
Kucinich's bill, titled the "Benjamin Franklin True Patriot Act", would repeal sections of the USA PATRIOT Act that authorize sneak and peak searches, warrentless library, medical, and financial record searches, and the detention and deportation of non-citizens without meaningful judicial review. Beyond the PATRIOT Act, the bill also cements the fundamental right of attorney-client privilege and restores transparency in the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security by revoking FOIA secrecy orders. The bill is supported by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and Religious Action Center of Reformed Judaism. In addition the bill has 25 Congressional co-sponsors.
