Presidential candidate to make encore appearance with new hat on
Santa Cruz County will get a second visit from United States Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich this week as he makes an encore appearance in Santa Cruz at the Rio Theatre.
A four-term Congressman from Ohio, Kucinich will bring his grassroots, progressively liberal agenda to area residents.
Kucinich was in Santa Cruz in May but was unable to truly lay out his ideas on politics because he had not yet declared his candidacy and because of a political technicality restraining what he could say.
"A lot of people heard what the congressman had to say last time," said Denise O'Connor, events coordinator for the Kucinich election team. "This time the people will hear what the presidential candidate has to say."
O'Connor said Kucinich has been gaining ground on his fellow Democratic hopefuls with his environmental record, women's rights ideas, his desire to disband the World Trade Organization and the Patriot Act and his disdain for the war in Iraq.
"We are finding locally that students who have never been interested in politics are getting interested in this man because he speaks about issues they are concerned with," O'Connor said.
Kucinich has been bold in seeking an alternative path for the country, with plans of battling corporate domination of politics, media consolidation and what he sees as policies leading to endless war.
Some of his main objectives, should he be elected, are the creation of a universal health care plan for all U.S. citizens.
He has introduced legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to establish a Cabinet-level Department of Peace as part of the Executive Branch of government and voted against both the war in Iraq and the Patriot Act.
Kucinich will hold two lectures on Sunday at the Rio Theatre, 1205 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz. The first lecture will be held at 4 p.m. at a cost of $10-15 with a special introduction by author John Robbins. The second lecture will be at 7 p.m. for $25-40 with a special introduction by musician Michelle Shocked plus other guests.
