slavery reparations
Sometimes, a candidate can get mentioned in stories completely unrelated to his campaign because of a particular position that he takes. For instance, an article about two African-Americans who took an unorthodox path towards claiming slavery reparations, notes:
The issue of slavery reparations has long simmered in the United States, but some say it may be gaining momentum.
Blacks last year filed lawsuits in several states against a number of large corporations, alleging they profited from slavery for two centuries and that blacks should be compensated.
More recently, Democratic presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich said that if elected president he would order a study of reparations for descendants of slaves.
Kucinich mentioned this during the fundraising breakfast in Seattle that I attended earlier in October and again during his formal announcement speech. He believes that the money should be spent on improving infrastructure, schools, and other public services in African-American communities, a position that I agree with.
