Lee to host forums for Democratic hopefuls
By STAFF REPORTS
Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Oakland, has announced she will sponsor a series of East Bay forums with Democratic presidential candidates.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, with whom Lee co-chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus, will be up first, appearing at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, at Taylor United Methodist Church, 1188 12th St., Oakland.
The Rev. Al Sharpton will appear Thursday, Dec. 11, at a site yet to be announced, and former U.S. senator and ambassador Carol Moseley Braun will appear next at a date and place to be announced. Confirmation is pending from former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean, retired Gen. Wesley Clark and U.S. Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., and John Edwards, D-N.C. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., has declined to take part.
Each forum in Lee's "Bring it to the Bay: National Leadership 2004" series will last 90 minutes, including the candidate's remarks and a question-and-answer period moderated by local journalists.
"At a time when our president and his administration seem to have forgotten to listen to the people of this country, it is all the more crucial that Democratic leaders seeking the nomination participate in frank and open discussions with Americans about the direction we're headed in as a nation," Lee said in a news release Wednesday.
