And these biotech industries have Congress' attention, too. In 2001, current Democratic presidential hopeful Congressman Dennis Kucinich offered the Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act as an amendment to the 2001 agriculture appropriations bill. It was withdrawn without a vote. In 2002, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced the Genetically Engineered Foods Act, which would require, among other things, full disclosure from the industry and much greater oversight and review. That bill never left committee but is expected to be reintroduced this year.
