Letter to the Editor: Kucinich has fire, vision, conviction
Carolina Morning News
As a conservative Republican I regret having missed the opportunity to meet Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) at the S.C. Progressive Voter Coalition (in northern Beaufort County).
I, too, have been thinking, analyzing and pondering just who I should support in the next presidential election. All my life I have been a staunch, diehard, conservative Republican. No more.
After 12 years with the same company I was laid off. My health insurance premiums went from $600 per month to $950 per month. We had to drop the insurance.
Having mistakenly put our confidence in American business we lost a good part of our retirement savings when the stock market bubble burst.
My wife (a registered nurse) injured herself (off the job). Her short-term policy expired. We ran up $50,000 in medical expenses and declared bankruptcy with $150,000 in debt.
She now needs a $100,000 spinal fusion operation that we can't afford.
So we spend $600 per month on prescription medications to help her with her pain and depression (drugs that barely work). We send to Canada for some for half price (I recommend it).
I can't work because her pain is horrific and relentless and she needs constant help.
I now support Kucinich. He has honesty, integrity, energy, enthusiasm and a well-thought-out plan for universal health care (including dental and drugs) for all, with a practical plan to pay for it.
He is the only candidate with a plan to act forcefully against sending American jobs overseas where people work for 35 cents an hour with no benefits. He is the only candidate with a plan for 0 percent unemployment, and a plan for peace instead of constant war and fear.
He has a plan on how NOT to spend $600 billion in Iraq, Africa and the Middle East. He has a plan to rein in the extravagant military budget and the out-of-control pricing policies of the pharmaceutical/health insurance conglomerate.
I am now a progressive, populist Democrat. I really don't care about the label. Kucinich is the only candidate who has the fire and fortitude of Teddy Roosevelt, the vision and perspective of FDR, and the sincere, patriotic conviction of Barry Goldwater.
