Kucinich Campaign Expanding in Iowa

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October, 21, 2003

As other Presidential candidates have made decisions to abandon Iowa and the caucuses, the campaign of Dennis Kucinich is expanding in Iowa. Today, a new office is being opened in Iowa City, and an office in Ames is set to open soon.

"Dennis Kucinich has spent more than 30 days talking to Iowa voters, learning about issues that matter to people here. Our campaign staff is made up almost entirely of people who lived and worked in Iowa prior to this campaign and will stay in Iowa afterward to help make this an even better place to live. Dennis Kucinich will continue to campaign in Iowa and continue to offer Iowa caucus-goers the sharpest contrast with the Bush Administration's war, trade and health care policies that have failed Iowa and the rest of the country," said John Friedrich, Iowa and Midwest Political Director.

"Of the five candidates who are now campaigning in Iowa, Dennis Kucinich offers caucus-goers the clearest alternative to George Bush and the best shot at defeating him in the general election," said Friedrich. "Among the five candidates, Rep. Kucinich is the only candidate pushing to end the occupation of Iraq with an exit strategy that would bring U.S. troops home and turn control of the transition over to the United Nations. Congressman Kucinich is the only candidate among the five campaigning in Iowa with a plan to overhaul our broken health care system with a truly universal, single-payer program. Rep. Kucinich is the only candidate who both voted against the Iraq War and opposes the flawed NAFTA. While Dick Gephardt voted against NAFTA, he doesn't favor its repeal, and he voted for the GATT/WTO, which is like NAFTA on steroids.

"With only five candidates taking Iowa and Iowans seriously, voters will have a better chance to learn about where each of these candidates stand on issues that matter to them. The unique role of the Iowa caucus is that it provides people the chance to really know candidates, to get beyond sound bites and 30 second commercials. The Iowa caucus should be about much more than who has the most money and who is leading the horse race. Iowa provides voters a rare chance to participate in democracy at the grassroots level, which is a golden opportunity to learn which candidate best represents our interests and beliefs," said Friedrich.

"The best way to defeat Bush is to nominate a candidate who contrasts with him sharply on key issues. Only Kucinich voted against Bush’s war on Iraq. Only Kucinich voted against Bush’s 'PATRIOT Act.' Only Kucinich has a plan to bring the troops home by New Year’s. Only Kucinich would repeal NAFTA and the WTO as his first act in office, and replace them with fair trade agreements that protect workers’ rights and the environment. Only Kucinich has introduced a bill to provide every American with health coverage. Only Kucinich would cut Pentagon waste and make free preschool available to all. And only Kucinich has defeated incumbent Republicans for the offices of mayor, state senator, and U.S. congress member. We encourage Iowans who want to defeat George. W. Bush to join us in caucusing for Dennis Kucinich in January."
