Following the campaign, October 15

From Karin Caifa:

WALKING FOR KUCINICH
Jonathan Meier has an ambitious way to show support for his candidate. He’ll begin a cross-country walk from Portland, Maine, to California, this Friday. In doing so, he hopes to raise awareness for the campaign, raise funds and pick up some walking partners along the way. “We need to draw awareness to all of the positive steps that Dennis will take once elected, and we need to develop a sense of community throughout the U.S., where people will open up to each other, letting go of their fears, and treat each other as brothers and sisters instead of as strangers and ‘potential terrorists,’” Meier said, according to the campaign. Meier also says he has been greatly influenced by Gandhi. The first leg of the walk will stretch from Portland to Washington, D.C. The second will extend to Des Moines, and the third to San Francisco. Kucinich volunteers will provide places to sleep, shower and eat vegan meals along the way.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY — AGAIN
Though he turned 57 last Wednesday, Kucinich is turning October into a “birthday month.” Campaign staffers and volunteers had a cake and candles for the candidate on Sunday and he was greeted with choruses of “Happy Birthday” and “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” during a pre-announcement visit. “What did you wish for?” shouted one staffer. “I think we know what he wished for,” answered Campaign Manager Dot Maver. “You’re gonna get it!” said another enthusiastically. Yes, Kucinich blew out the candles on the cake, but no, he did not eat any. See, the campaign admitted that the carrot cake with almonds they’d chosen was not vegan-friendly. In fact, one volunteer told me on the hush-hush that it was from Sam’s Club.

ANIMAL HOUSE?
Kucinich interns Chris and Julia informed me that the eight paid interns assisting the campaign staff all live together in a house about a block away from national headquarters. I asked them if the milieu in the house is more “Real World” or more “Survivor.” “We haven’t voted anybody off yet,” Chris said. “We don’t really vote anyone off. We just send them to New Hampshire. Or Iowa.” Both very diplomatically assured me that although eight people with different backgrounds living together presents its challenges, everyone seems to be getting along just fine.
