Following the campaign, October 29
From Karin Caifa:
BLASTING BUSH
President Bush’s press conference Monday, not surprisingly, met with strong criticism by Kucinich. The congressman issued the following statement: “The assertion by the president that daily attacks on U.S. troops and innocent Iraqi civilians is ‘progress’ is ridiculous and just as false and misleading as his prewar statements about the threat posed to the United States by Iraq.”
MORE ENDORSEMENTS
Kucinich’s bid continues to pick up endorsements from all fields. Monday, the campaign sent a release acknowledging that actor Danny Glover of “Lethal Weapon” fame has jumped on the Kucinich bandwagon as has author Howard Zinn (“A People’s History of the United States”). Glover campaigned with Kucinich in Florida last week and will be present with Kucinich at a California fund-raiser over the weekend.
COURTING THIRD PARTIES
Speaking of endorsements, Kucinich got the nod of New Hampshire’s Green Party during a visit to the Granite State over the weekend. A New Hampshire Green Party spokesman even talked of the party recruiting Kucinich for the national ticket if he doesn’t win the Democratic nomination. In order to vote for Kucinich in the Granite State’s Jan. 27 primary, the Greens registered as Independents (Green is not a recognized party in New Hampshire) can declare themselves as Democrats on the way into the voting booth and undeclare themselves on the way out. Greens registered as Republicans, however, would have to change their party affiliation by this week’s deadline (Friday) in order to cast a vote. Because the Green Party is not officially recognized there, it’s unclear how many folks are members. But approximately 22,000 people cast votes for Green Party candidate Ralph Nader in the 2000 general election. Kucinich has been the darling of third parties out of this field of nine, with even Nader encouraging Greens to support the congressman in the primaries. On Saturday, Ohio’s Natural Law Party will hold a fund-raiser for Kucinich in Columbus. National Natural Law Party leader John Hagelin has already endorsed Kucinich, as has Nader’s 2000 running mate Winona LaDuke. The support has been an integral part of this campaign’s grass-roots strategy of building a support base slowly but steadily, and grabbing support wherever it can.
