Band's political opinions will elude most fans

From an Edmonton Journal story about rock group the Barenaked Ladies

Steven Page, whose voice and lyrics have defined the Ladies since they hit the fair-to-middling time a decade ago, and often speaks for the band now that they have hit the big, big time, personifies the funny yet thoughtful dialectic. His blog on the band's official Web site shifts from changing his name to Harbinger Carrot, P.I. (Oct. 8) to musing about the Democratic nomination in the U.S (Oct. 12).

"Why does even the left-wing media say things like: 'Howard Dean is the most progressive option for the Democrats (besides Kucinich)'? This occurs in both The Progressive and The Nation's current issues. It's time to take Dennis Kucinich out of the brackets and treat him as the viable and believable candidate he is."

Most of the people who buy Everything to Everyone will not have heard of Dennis Kucinich or The Nation. When they listen to the song, Shopping, they may think to themselves, yes, shopping makes me feel better, too, but this tension is what makes Barenaked Ladies special.
