A poll released Friday found that the race for the Democratic presidential nomination is close in Ohio.
The Ohio Poll, conducted by the University of Cincinnati's Institute for Policy research, surveyed 321 registered voters identifying themseves as Democrats or independents. The poll, conducted by telephone from Sept. 4-19, had a margin of sampling error of 5.5 percentage points.
Sen. Joe Lieberman was favored by 22 percent, U.S. Rep. Dick Gephardt drew 14 percent, and U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a former Cleveland mayor, and former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean drew 9 percent each.
Sen. John Kerry had 8 percent; followed by the Rev. Sharpton and former Sen. Carole Mosely Braun, 6 percent each; Sen. Bob Graham, 5 percent; retired Gen. Wesley Clark, 3 percent; and Sen. John Edwards, 1 percent.
Lieberman enjoys high name recognition from his campaign for vice president three years ago with Al Gore, poll director Eric Rademacher said.
"It's fairly clear that name recognition is really driving these Democratic and independent voter preferences," Rademacher said.
The field should narrow dramatically by the time of the Ohio primary on March 4. The Iowa caucuses kick off the nomination race on Jan. 19, with the New Hampshire primary a week later.
