Clothes Make the Candidate
It was an elegant tie, red silk, of a fine weave and a tasteful pattern. Played against a white shirt, the effect did not achieve full value on television. It was, after all, the ensemble of Dennis Kucinich. It was not the cravat but the message, cold steel and uncompromising, that was the thing by which Kucinich had hoped to win the Thursday Democratic debate. The necktie, however, may win out over the message among voters this early in the political pre-season.

It was difficult for any of the candidates to break clear of the herd on issues. Handicapping their ties was less arduous. Surprisingly, the winner in the cravat race was Kucinich, with Clark a close second.
