Kucinich requests federal investigation of attacks on Cleveland homeless

In non-campaign related news, the Beacon Journal reports on a disturbing series of crimes in Cleveland: some people have been using stun-guns on sleeping homeless people and videotaping it.

As a Congressional representative for Cleveland, Kucinich has requested that the Department of Justice investigate:

"As cruel and outrageous as these attacks are, we know these are not isolated incidents," Kucinich, a Democrat from Cleveland, wrote in a letter to U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft.

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, there have been 212 attacks on homeless people, including 122 murders, from 1999 to 2002 nationwide, Kucinich said.

"Please initiate an investigation into these attacks on homeless persons and take all necessary action to ensure that the laws are enforced to protect the homeless," Kucinich wrote.

The Justice Department did not immediately return a phone call requesting comment.
