Kucinich: DOD Hawks Seeking New War In Iran
Recent Press Account States DOD Officials Are Seeking Regime Change In Iran
Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Ranking Member of the House Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Emerging Threats and International Relations, today issued the following statement on a Newsday story that states that Department of Defense officials are seeking regime change in Iran:
"Today's report in Newsday that officials at the Department of Defense are conducting 'secret' talks with an Iranian arms dealer with the goal of undermining US policy in the region and starting a new war are both shocking and disturbing.
"Such actions by the Defense Department, without Congressional authorization or consent, sends a dangerous signal to the world community and could lead to the further destabilization of the region.
"If such actions are unauthorized, as claimed by the White House, the President must act now to seek the resignation of those officials involved. To allow back channel conversations with arms dealers undermines US policy in the region and threatens to send our nation into another deadly war in the region.
"It is time for Congress to hold open hearings into the secret dealings of the Defense Department. It is clear that by dealing with Iranian arms dealers they have not learned the lessons of the past."
