Kucinich Applauds Supreme Court Ruling On Affirmative Action
Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH), Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, today, issued to following statement on the decision by the United States Supreme Court to uphold the principles of Affirmative Action:
"Our nation is better and stronger today because the Supreme Court reiterated America's commitment to equality and affirmative action.
"America's diversity is a strength, not a weakness, and the Court's decision underscores the importance of supporting programs like affirmative action that enhance opportunities for those who have been historically left behind.
"The court clearly recognized, as I do, that even though this nation has come a long way towards racial equality, there is still a long journey ahead. That way can now be cleared with affirmative action programs that take race into account. Affirmative action is a critical tool that can help universities achieve a student body that is diverse, capable, multi-talented, and supports the values upon which America was founded.
"This decision recognizes that diverse and racially integrated campuses benefit not only all students, but also our national security, our economy and ultimately the full fabric of our nation."
Kucinich joined 110 Members of Congress, on February 18, 2003, in signing a friend of the court brief on behalf of the University of Michigan.
