Kucinich: President's War Unjustified and Wrong
Today's Report To UN Should Renew Efforts For Disarmament; Not Be Used For An Unjustified Preemptive Attack
Today's report to the United Nations (UN) Security Council by the UN weapons inspectors reinforces the need to continue active and aggressive weapons inspections in Iraq but, once again, fell far short of justifying the Administration's rush to preemptive war, stated Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) today.
Kucinich, who leads opposition in the House to the war in Iraq, issued the following statement:
"Today's report at the UN signals a continued need for weapons inspectors. While there may be many unanswered questions about Iraq's weapons programs, war will not find the answers to these questions. The worldwide goal of disarmament for Iraq can be achieved through weapons inspections.
"Contrary to what President Bush said last night, going to war without UN Security Council approval or other allies, would be a violation of international law and would increase the risk of terrorist attacks upon this country.
"The President, once again, failed to justify his Administration's misguided and dangerous policy towards Iraq. The President presented no new evidence to prove that Iraq poses an imminent threat to our nation. The President's war rhetoric only serves to undermine the effort of the international community to disarm Iraq. The President proved that the Administration's predetermined march to war is not about disarmament but, regime change.
"Today's report to the UN served as a stark reminder that the Administration is increasingly alienating the United States from the world. This Administration's policy of regime change and unilateral action risks isolating the United States from the international community and will permanently alter the United States standing in the world.
"War with Iraq is wrong. It will make our nation and the world less safe, and would violate international law. Now, more than ever, it is urgent that the President, and his Administration, use the United States' considerable influence to lead the world community towards a peaceful solution to the crisis in Iraq, not force the international community into an unjustified war."
