Kucinich: Administration Fails To Make Case For War
Fails to Demonstrate Imminent Threat to US
If the U.S. is going to launch an unprecedented preemptive war, the Administration needs to prove that Iraq poses an immediate and imminent threat to the United States, Secretary of State Colin Powell failed to make that case to the United Nations (UN) Security Council stated Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) today.
Kucinich, who leads opposition in the House to the war in Iraq, today issued the following statement following Secretary Powell's presentation to the UN:
"Today's presentation failed to make the case for a unprecedented preemptive attack against Iraq. The threshold for war must be that Iraq poses an imminent threat to the United States and our allies.
"In today's presentation, the Administration again failed to demonstrate the imminent threat posed by Iraq. The Administration still has failed to make a connection between Iraq and Al-Queda. Nor has the Administration produce evidence connecting Iraq and 9/11, or Iraq and the Anthrax attack on our nation.
"Secretary Powell made the case for inspections and disarmament, not war. Iraq can and must do more to cooperate with the international community, yet there is no justification for a preemptive war. UN weapons inspectors are currently conducting exhaustive inspections of Iraq. The United States must pull back from the verge of war, and assist the UN to disarm Iraq."
