Kucinich: Administration's Latest Rhetoric Undermines UN; Sets US on Path to War

The latest round of inflammatory rhetoric by the Administration is undermining the United Nations (UN) weapons inspectors goals of disarming Iraq and pushing the United States to the verge of a unilateral war, stated Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH).

Kucinich, Ranking Member of the House Government Reform Subcommittee on National Security, Veterans Affairs and International Relations issued the following statement:

"Yesterday's rhetoric by the Administration is another example that this Administration is determined to proceed with a preemptive unilateral strike against Iraq, and has abandoned its commitment to the international community to disarm Iraq through the United Nation Monitoring Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC).

"Currently in Iraq, UN inspectors are in the process of conducting the most extensive and intrusive weapons inspections in its in history. The questioning of the inspector's timetable in conjunction with the enormous troop build-up in the region, raise serious questions about the Administration's commitment to the UN weapons inspection process.

"Such rhetoric seems to indicate that the Administration is set to proceed with its predetermined goal of a preemptive war against Iraq, even in the face of international objections and regardless of the findings of the UN weapons inspectors.

"The United States must stop the rhetoric, pull back from the verge of war, abide by its commitments to the international community and allow UN weapons inspection to proceed."
