There are several ways you can display a unique icon for each category. The most straightforward is to name the image file after the dirified version of the category name and then call it in an image tag.

You can make it much easier on yourself by using the Topicon plugin. You still have to create the image files and name them properly, but instead of a long and complicated HTML string to enter, you just use the <$MTTopicIcon$> tag.

Some plugins add new functionality and flexibility to your blog. Others just make your life a little easier.
