four years of blogging

Date: May 23, 2006 | 23 Rabi al-Akhir 1427 Hijriah
As of tomorrow. Hard as it is to believe, I started this blog four years ago, on May 24, 2002. Posting is very sporadic these days and likely to remain so - my job keeps me busy and after eight hours dealing with blogs (in tech support) I often don't feel like doing anything with my own.

I greatly appreciate those of you who are still reading. Thank you. For those who visit the site directly (instead of reading via RSS), I've added a little section above the posts (which don't change very often) which features things I've been reading lately, courtesy of del.icio.us. This is updated in real-time and I usually add a couple links to it every day since it's much faster and easier than blogging. So you might find this interesting or of value, inshallah.

Despite how infrequently I post to this blog, I like having it. When the mood does strike, I like having a place to put up things of interest. Blogging is something I do for myself, even though I hope others may find it valuable in some way.

The last four years have been quite interesting. When I started the blog, I had recently become unemployed. That fall I went back to school to study to be a paralegal. However, the job market for that wasn't too good and I had a variety of prospects that just didn't work out.

Then in August 2004, I hooked up with the job I've had ever since then and still am going strong at. Working for Six Apart is terrific. Just being able to work from home and not have the hassle and expense of a commute is worth a great deal to me. I love the work that I do and the people that I work with. Best of all, as a start-up, Six Apart offers good opportunities for career growth and advancement. Starting last fall, I have moved into more of a leadership position on my team, with lots of new responsibilities and challenges. Allah SWT has truly blessed me in giving me this opportunity smile

Even though I don't blog too much myself, it can truly be said that blogging is what makes my world go. Back in May 2002, hardly anybody blogged. It seemed like the famous blogs could all be counted on the fingers of one hand. And just look at it now! How many people now make their living by or from blogging.

I love reading blogs. For me the best thing is finding a link to something interesting or important that I never would have found on my own. I'm a voracious reader but more and more what I spend all my time reading isn't books but information on the web. Blogs pull it all together. For an information junkie, they're like crack wink

So here's to another four years and more. May they bring me as far as the last four years have. And here's to all of you who check out this little corner of the blogosphere. Please do keep dropping by every now and then and may you have all the best. Peace and blessings.

P.S. In a brief experiment, comments are open. I usually don't have time to moderate them, or the energy to deal with the trolling it always brought but hopefully, this will go well, inshallah.

Heh. This is the longest original-content post I've written in months, if not years. Still kicking, after all

Subject: Excellent stuff

Assalamu Alaikum,

Your blog is always a good read. Your blog is one of very few of its kind so please don't underestimate its importance. Regardless, what impresses me most is your undying integrity. You've stood up to a lot of terrible trolling and vicious commenting from other blogs as well as individual commenters. You've handled it all with nothing less than patience and finesse (a pretty cool combo, heh). Congratulations.

I don't come as often as I'd like to (1. I prefer to read in digests of posts as opposed to single dailies 2. I've got licensing exams all over the place [Duas please!]) but I hope you do nothing but increase the quality and quantity of your writing.

Jazzak Allahu Khair.

Wassalamu Alaikum

As-salaamu alaykum,

What a wonderful thing to say. May Allah SWT bless you. All praise is due to Him for any good I have accomplished with this blog.

I'm not sure if I'll open comments on more than this post, as I don't have the time or energy to deal with trolls and Islamophobic haters.

I hope your exams go well, inshallah.

Ma'a salama

Thanks for letting me know! I'm afraid I don't have the time to check the blogroll for updates very often, so it is sadly behind the times.

I'll try to update these items this weekend, inshallah. I have some other blogs I was saving up to add as well.

Peace and best wishes.

Dear Sister!

Thank you very much for your good job. Especially in these times we need independant informations all over the world.

1984 from George Orwell is past for over 20 years now, so the conditions of life on this earth are even worse.

May Allah bless you!

Hi Peter,

Peace and greetings and thanks for visiting and leaving a comment. I'm glad you enjoy the blog. Independent information, or just information from sources one wouldn't usually be able to find, is one of the most important things about blogs for me too.

Subject: Great Blog

I just found your blogs today, and I love them - well, the two that i've seen thus far anyhow. smile

I have a question for you. What do you do for SixApart? You said that you get to work form home - are there still positions that come up like that? I notice that the ones listed right now are all on site in the Bay Area. Should I just keep checking back, or write this possibility off?

Hi Peggy,

Thanks for visiting and leaving a comment! I do tech support work. We're in the final stages of hiring someone currently so we won't likely have any new open positions for some time to come, but any support jobs would be posted to the company website, so definitely do keep checking back! smile

Most other jobs are on-site in San Francisco, however.

Peace and blessings.

Subject: Masha'Allah!

Asalaamu Alaikum Sister,

I cannot believe it has been 4 years already! Masha'Allah, you have created such a place of wonder.

When I read your blogs, I feel like I am reading justice in the making. No matter what religion a person identifies with, truth is undeniable. Your posts are nothing but real, raw, and righteous displays of that 'truth' which we all so desire.

As for the negativity you've received over they years, your grace under fire has been truly admirable. As they say, 'the best revenge is living well.' Praise be to God that your life is on track, and you are well where it matters! You have succeeded in translating that negativity into inner strength, and making your blogs better for it.

Ameen to your du'a a million times over!

With love,

Your Sister in Islam
