another look at bloc voting

Date: August 20, 2004 | 3 Rajab 1425 Hijriah
Subjects: politics, bloc, voting
Muqtedar Khan, a prominent liberal Muslim activist has written a policy paper The 2004 Presidential Elections: What Should American Muslims Do? (PDF). He looks at developments in the community since 2000, examines the advantages and disadvantages of bloc voting, and ultimately argues against it. I've argued for bloc voting previously in this space, particuarly in the primaries, where there may be some chance to influence a party's platform (Muslims could even practice a dual bloc strategy, for both the Democrats and Republicans, if applicable). However, I agree that Khan's arguments are compelling especially as they relate to the general election and in any case the American Muslim community is clearly not ready yet. Those who fear that American Muslims are a "fifth column" must be unaware of the many fissures in the American Muslim community that prevent it from acting as a single bloc on even the most minor of issues. If we can't even agree on the date to observe our holidays, I don't think we'll be carrying out some evil anti-American plot together. Muslims are not some sort of evil, monolithic Other, we are human beings just like you, with flaws and good points.

Also, Juan Cole looks at whether the U.S. military actions in Najaf will turn Iraqi Americans against Bush.
