sinking to a new low

Date: August 14, 2004 | 26 Jumada al-Akhir 1425 Hijriah
Subjects: darfur, commentary
The Islam Online site seems to have ties to some prominent religious scholars in Egypt, who are often cited as authorities of matters of jurisprudence. Although their views on some issues seem reasonable enough, their views on others are not. A case in point is Darfur. While researching for my previous posts on Darfur, I went by the Islam Online site to see what they had to say. I found a bunch of articles that tend to downplay the claims of genocide or atrocities and promote the views of the Sudanese government and the Arabs in Darfur. Some examples include this, this, this, this, this, this, this, this, and this.

That was bad enough. Then I noticed an article yesterday called US Offensive in Najaf 'Genocide'. Excuse my language here but what the FUCK? There are reasons to be concerned about what's been going on in Najaf. But to call it genocide while asserting that the much more dire situation in Darfur, many orders of magnitude worse, is not is some seriously deranged thinking. Talk about putting asabiyya (nationalism) in front of your morality. Istifghirullah!1
