an informed commentator

Date: July 19, 2004 | 30 Jumada al-Awwal 1425 Hijriah
Subjects: iraq
One of the blogs I particularly rely on is Juan Cole's Informed Comment. Cole is a professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic history at the University of Michigan. I read his blog to get latest news from Iraq from sources outside the U.S. media. He's also extremely knowledgeable about Islam and is very effective at debunking various Islamophobic claims that are being put about by various right-wing elements. Of all the different viewpoints I see in the blogosphere about Iraq, and Middle Eastern issues in general, Cole's is probably the one I agree with most.

The University of Michigan's "Michigan Today" magazine has an interview with Cole. Do check it out, inshallah. The highlighted quote is:

You remember in Star Wars, when the characters are in a trash compactor, and one says, "I have a bad feeling about this." That's how I feel about this enterprise.
Cole said he posted that to an email list in spring 2003. Looking back, that's exactly how I felt too. I never had a good feeling about Iraq, and things have gotten much worse much faster than I ever imagined. Cole says he sees no good news and no exit from the disaster in Iraq anytime soon and I'm afraid he's probably right about that too. What in the name of God have we gotten ourselves into here? Where will it end? At this point, I'm almost afraid to find out but I only see things getting worse and worse
