Detectives are investigating whether an early Friday morning arson in Everett is actually a hate crime. Whoever set a Middle Eastern grocery store on fire also left behind a message. And there's more, says the Everett Herald:
What's left of Continental Spices is burnt out and boarded up. As soon as fire fighters arrived, they could smell the gasoline. They found an empty gas and racist graffiti left behind.
Spray painted inside the Middle Eastern store were white crosses and the letters 'F U Arab.'
Meanwhile, a cross was burned at the home of a Middle Eastern family in Edmonds, police there reported Friday. The Edmonds investigation so far indicates that the malicious act may have been done by a former longtime friend of the homeowner's teenage son, Edmonds police said.At some point we're going to need to stand up and say clearly that this kind of thing should not be happening in America.
Apparently, the former friend "had a parting of the ways" with the teenage son, Edmonds police Sgt. Jeffrey Jones said Friday.
The cross was made of wood and about 5 feet tall. It was set on fire in the front yard of the home in the 16000 Block of 75 Place W., and the flames charred some shrubs but didn't do any extensive damage to the house.
