The self-styled "Muslim cowgirl", Asma Gull Hasan, is someone whose views I don't always agree with but she's written and amusing and entertaining article comparing being a Muslim in the West to being a Macintosh user in a PC world: Easy to Use: What do Macs and Islam have in common?. Enjoy smile

P.S. I use a PC though

As-Salaamu 'alaikum,

I'm a Mac user myself. But I didn't touch a Mac until after OS X came out - in fact 10.3 was my first Mac OS. For me it was the Unix aspect, along with the fact that (unlike Linux) it has a reasonable collection of applications. The security is head and shoulders above any version of Windoze.

I've been reading the computer press on and off since the early 1990's, and at that time the NeXT (made by Steve Jobs who now runs Apple) was the coolest, most futuristic system going. Mac OS X is actually the same OS which the NeXT used to run, it's just been modernised. It's superb (ma sha Allah).

I have had a computer since the IBM PC Junior came out 20 years ago....and have just bought a G4 MAC Powerbook for my new web based e-commerce business I am starting, since I figure I can do things with it for my web page and also, being an artist, I want to learn all the graphics software.
When I get my web site up, perhaps I will let you all see my original artwork I am designing on t-shirts.
One of my designs says, Wise People Know Kind Words Conquer
(An ancient Tamil saying)
I would like to do an Afghanistan saying also which says, "Food before religion," but I don't think that one would reach many people......take care and I guess I also have joined the apple crowd, but I am keeping my regular PC going also.
But this powerbook does everything but get up and dance...I can even compose my own music on it!!!!!
Lovely!

Heh, well as a Certified Mac Tech whose Mac skills are paying my bills right now, I'm glad for the niche market! Seriously, a friend sent me this and I couldn't help but think of Umberto Eco's Mac is Catholic, PC is Protestant. Of course, that was back during the DOS days...:-)

Salaam and duas,
All the news on USA TV today is about a definite horrible terrorist attack in the USA sometime this summer.
The basic American DOES NOT HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT BIN LADEN'S DEMANDS OR HIS COHARTS WANT TO END THIS WAR.
How can we get a list of his demands on Islamic digest or somewhere so Americans can understand what is going on??????
If you don't know what your enemy wants, how can you negotiate?
Help here anywhere? There needs to be a summit with protection for Bin Laden and all enemies together to form a truce....but how can it happen? We all need peace!!!!!!!! But most American's know the Palistinians need protection from Sharon.

Despite what some people seem to think, I'm not the person to ask about what Bin Laden thinks or wants. In fact, I haven't seen anything about the story you're mentioning so I don't know enough to comment on it. Sounds like it should happen just in time for the elections this fall, though (yes, that is an extremely cynical remark).

OK, now I'm caught up on the news. Still as cynical as before, though. I feel that the Bush Administration is preying on peoples' fear of terrorism for their own political gain, which I find despicable. They hope that if we're in a panic about when and where the next terrorist attack comes from, we'll stop asking questions about why the Bush Administration's actions in Iraq have made such a terrorist attack on the U.S. much more likely than it was a year ago. I don't like being manipulated and I refuse to live my life dominated by fear.

What Bin Laden demands or doesn't demand is really beside the point. The U.S. needs to start taking actions and following policies to bring some justice into the world instead of engaging in imperialistic adventures. Why is Bin Laden not already arrested, tried, and executed? Because Bush took us on a year-long detour into Iraq. Let's put the blame where it belongs.

But really, the mainstream American doesn't even know why the trade towers were attacked and the Pentagon...of course, the USA and big oil have done atrocities of their own, like in Nicaragua and Venezuela covertly and in other places...but most Americans are even ignorant of that. I went out a couple of times years ago with a Saudi. He told me that in 100 years, the Saudis' knew their oil was going to run out and that they were trying to educate everyone to prepare for not having oil revenue. At least that is what he told me. I have read and studied, but still do not know why America is targeted by Bin Laden. What does he really want from us? What did we do to him to make him hate us so much.....I just thought perhaps someone who reads the site might have an inkling. We should not be in Iraq....more people and destruction have happened to the innocents than under Sadam. I wish Bin Laden would send a tape to the American networks saying why he is doing what he is doing and why and what is would take for peace. What he is doing is making prejudice against Muslims and Islam and that is bad, because most are peace loving and are only out for revenge for the death of relatives....something is going on which no American understands.....the average American cannot make Bush stop the Israelis from the horrible things they do to the Palistinians.....it is Bush. Attacking innocent Americans just doesn't seem the right way to go, but a campaign of truth could help get Bush out of the White House more than attacking innocent Americans....one saying I read which I like says: Revenge digs two graves. I saw a documentary on Sundance TV channel the other night about a woman who was in the Israeli military for many years....then after the Israeli attack and massacres she witnessed in Lebanon, she quit the military...and no longer felt Israel was doing the right thing....it was very good. Now she does not believe in what her own country is doing. There are many people who believe the Palistinians are not being treated fairly, even in Israel. If Bin Laden was smart, he would use the truth and not hate to teach why he is doing these things so people could understand. The upper level politicians do not let the common people know what they do. I just want peace for everyone. I want to know why there is so much hatred and violence. I just want to understand it.
Thanks for listening to my rambling.
