Islam and the environment

Date: April 22, 2004 | 1 Rabi al-Awwal 1425 Hijriah
In honor of Earth Day, here are some links on Islamic environmentalism: arguments made using Islamic texts and traditions in favor of taking action to protect the environment:

Towards an Islamic Jurisprudence of the Environment

Animals in Islam

Guardians of the Natural Order

The last of these articles is from the Islamic Foundation for Ecology and Environmental Sciences, an NGO that has started a number of environmental projects in the Muslim world and provides consulting to other environmental organizations. Their website has a number of further links and resources.

Subject: Islam and the environment

It's too bad Bush and his favoritism of big business which is responsible for much of the polluting of the USA won't study the Koran's ideas of the environment....I don't blame many countries for not wanting to be like the USA......
Chief Shawnee, a Native American Indian years and years and year ago, once told an American President, "The White Man will one day suffocate on his on waste."
And many diseases are becoming epidemic in the USA from toxic chemicals in the fertilizers, foods and polluted water sources and many lakes and rivers, no one can even eat the fish in them anymore.....I don't think there are many rivers in the USA where people can actually eat the abundant amount of fish available....In the next one hundred years, the main hindrance to economic development is going to be the lack of clean water worldwide...and really, I think much of the problem in the Israeli/Palestinian conflict is access to the fresh water.
Many here pray Bush is not re-elected. The solution to peace is not violence and I wish some of the radical clerics would realize that also.

Subject: environment & islam

The UN development report talked about the environmental records in muslim countries which it states is abysmal. We can talk about the origins of islamic faith and its relationship with the environment. I am not sure that this is the expertise that is needed. I want people to understand economics and public health. I want muslims to understand the evidence in particulate air pollution, and be able to make scientific decisions about the environment based on the science. It is much more complicated than individual responsibility. Many of these issues need to be dealt with on a governmental policy level, and unfortunately most muslims are not interested, and don't have the relevant expertise to even begin to enter the debate. I hope that we start studying things that allow us to engage with the world in constructive ways.
